In a senseless act of violence that shook a Minneapolis community, 15-year-old Deshaun Hill, a Black/African American male, was fatally shot on February 9, 2022. A sophomore and honor roll student at North High School, Hill was the celebrated starting quarterback for the Polars football team, a young man with a promising future ahead of him. On that Wednesday afternoon, while walking to a bus stop near the intersection of North Golden Valley Road and North Penn Avenue, his life was tragically
cut short. He was found with a gunshot wound to the head and succumbed to his injuries the following day. Hill's death was not the story of a youth involved in street life; he was described as a compassionate and humble "perfect kid" who was the heart of his community and a focal point of an upcoming documentary about the North High football team.
The investigation into the seemingly random shooting led police to 29-year-old Cody Logan Fohrenkam. Surveillance footage and witness testimony were crucial in identifying him as the suspect. The video showed Fohrenkam and Hill passing each other on the sidewalk, close enough to possibly brush shoulders. Moments later, Fohrenkam was seen turning, pulling a gun from a backpack, and firing multiple shots as Hill walked away. Prosecutors suggested that Fohrenkam, who had allegedly been punched and had his phone stolen earlier that day, was angry and his confrontation with Hill was a tragic misfortune for the teen. Fohrenkam was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Initially, he denied being in the state at the time of the shooting but later admitted to being in the vicinity.
In January 2023, a jury found Cody Fohrenkam guilty of second-degree murder after deliberating for just an hour. He was subsequently sentenced to more than 38 years in prison. However, the legal saga was far from over. In May 2024, the Minnesota Court of Appeals overturned Fohrenkam's conviction and ordered a new trial. The reversal was based on the grounds that incriminating statements Fohrenkam made to investigators were illegally obtained. The court ruled that he was unconstitutionally detained for an interrogation after a court had ordered his release on an unrelated matter. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office expressed deep disappointment with the decision and vowed to retry the case to seek justice for Hill and his family. The process for the retrial was set to begin in the fall of 2024. In a separate civil matter, Hill's family reached a $500,000 settlement with the Minneapolis Public Schools, alleging he would not have been killed if the school had not allowed students to leave for a protest that day.
