In the early morning hours of September 23, 2025, the life of 35-year-old Kenlanda Burns, a Black female from Yazoo City, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. Burns, a cafeteria worker for the Yazoo City Municipal School District and a mother, was found shot to death at the Willow Wood Apartments on Grady Avenue. She was discovered by officers responding to the scene around dawn and was pronounced dead at 6:37 a.m.
from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head as she was leaving her apartment.
The news of her violent death quickly spread through the community, prompting a swift law enforcement response. Investigators identified 39-year-old Erwin Barnes, the father of Burns's children and her former boyfriend, as the suspect. A manhunt was immediately launched by the Yazoo City Police Department and the Yazoo County Sheriff's Department, who warned that Barnes was considered armed and dangerous. The search for Barnes stretched beyond Yazoo County as authorities diligently followed any leads on his whereabouts.
The intensive manhunt came to a somber conclusion later that same day. Authorities located Erwin Barnes near a Highway 49 rest stop in Pocahontas, within Hinds County. As law enforcement officers closed in, Barnes took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
