Authorities reported that Joshua had been hiding in an
outbuilding on his parents' property. When his mother, Shari, attempted to enter, he attacked her with a metal pipe. His father, Dave, and brother, Jason, intervened and were also assaulted by Joshua with the same weapon. The struggle intensified, with Joshua reportedly taking his brother to the ground and repeatedly punching him in the face. It was at this point that Dave Petersen, fearing for his family's safety, used a pistol to shoot his son.
When deputies from the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office arrived at the residence around 5:12 p.m., they found Joshua Petersen with two gunshot wounds to the chest. The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office has completed its initial investigation and has forwarded the case to the Freeborn County Attorney's Office for review to determine whether any charges will be filed.
