In the Frogtown neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota, the evening of November 14, 2020, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Leroy Uriah Spivey, a 34-year-old Black / African American man from Minneapolis, was found lying in the street near the intersection of Rice Street and Sherburne Avenue. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen following an argument.
The incident was reported in a 911 call around 8 p.m.
First responders arrived at the scene to find Spivey grievously wounded. Saint Paul Police officers administered aid before medics from the city's fire department rushed him to Regions Hospital. Despite their efforts, Leroy Uriah Spivey succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that night. His death marked the 30th homicide in Saint Paul for the year 2020.
In the days that followed, investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect in the case. Edward Grayson, a 33-year-old man, was identified as the primary suspect. Authorities determined that Grayson had fled to Chicago, Illinois, following the incident. In a coordinated effort, he was apprehended in Chicago and subsequently extradited back to Ramsey County, Minnesota. Grayson was then taken into custody and faced a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Leroy Uriah Spivey.
