In the early morning hours of July 31, 2025, a 14-year-old male named Jacarin Scott was fatally shot in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans. The incident occurred at approximately 4:22 a.m. in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue. According to his family, the bright and beloved teenager was simply on his way to a neighborhood convenience store when his life was tragically cut short.
The shooting happened right across from the mart.
New Orleans Police Department Fifth District officers responded to a call about the shooting and discovered the young man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office later confirmed that Jacarin Scott's death was the result of a gunshot wound. His death was one of two fatal shootings that occurred in the St. Roch neighborhood within a mere 10-minute span that morning. In the wake of his death, his family planned a candlelight vigil to honor his memory.
In the weeks following the shooting, the New Orleans Police Department announced that they were seeking a person of interest who they believed had information that could assist in the homicide investigation. Authorities released a picture of this individual and asked for the public's assistance in identifying and locating him for questioning. However, the police department made it clear that this person was not wanted for the crime at that time. As of late August 2025, the investigation was ongoing, and authorities were urging anyone with information to contact Homicide detectives or Crimestoppers anonymously. There have been no public announcements regarding arrests or specific suspects in the murder of Jacarin Scott.
