In the quiet evening of July 14, 2024, the life of 17-year-old Sahal Muridi was tragically cut short in Lewiston, Maine. At approximately 10:30 p.m., residents of the area around 77 Rideout Avenue were startled by the sound of gunshots. When Lewiston police officers arrived at the scene, they found the young male deceased on the ground. Friends and family were devastated by the loss of Muridi, who was remembered as a kind and well-liked mentor at a local organization.
He was a student at Lewiston High School and held a job, his sudden death sending shockwaves through the community.
The initial investigation into the homicide was taken over by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South, a standard procedure for such cases. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta later confirmed that Sahal Muridi's death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the head and neck. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two vehicles, a silver Mercedes and a black Dodge Challenger with temporary Maine license plates, fleeing the area shortly after the shooting. Investigators were able to identify and locate the driver of the Mercedes, who cooperated with the police.
For nearly a year, the investigation continued, involving the diligent work of the Maine State Police Crime Lab and Computer Crimes Unit, alongside the Lewiston Police Department. Their efforts eventually led to the identification of a suspect, 23-year-old Nasib Aden of Lewiston. On May 6, 2025, an Androscoggin County Grand Jury indicted Aden for murder. The investigation culminated in Aden's arrest on June 11, 2025, in Fridley, Minnesota, by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.
Following his arrest, Nasib Aden was extradited back to Maine on June 26, 2025. He was arraigned in Androscoggin Superior Court the next day, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder. Aden is currently being held at the Androscoggin County Jail as he awaits trial. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not yet released a motive for the shooting or detailed any potential connection between Muridi and Aden. The community continues to mourn the loss of a promising young life, as the legal process moves forward.
