In a quiet apartment complex in the St. Matthews suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 48-year-old Jeremy Thomas, a Black male. On the morning of Saturday, August 16, 2025, police responded to a call at the Jamestown Apartments on Markham Lane. Outside, they found a man and a woman with their hands up, who informed them that someone inside had been shot and needed medical help.

Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered Jeremy Thomas suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were quickly on the scene to perform life-saving measures before rushing him to University Hospital. Despite their efforts, Thomas succumbed to his injuries three days later, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed his death was a result of the shooting.
In the days following the incident, the St. Matthews Police Department made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspect was identified as Deonize Lee Jr., Thomas's stepson. According to court documents, an altercation between Lee and Thomas preceded the shooting. Lee was initially charged with assault, but after Thomas's death, the charge was upgraded to murder–domestic violence.
Investigators at the scene quickly determined that all parties involved in the incident were accounted for and that there was no further threat to the community. Lee was arrested and booked into jail with a bond set at $1 million. The investigation revealed that this was not Lee's only alleged violent crime; he was later indicted on charges related to other murders in the Louisville area.
