In the early evening hours of June 3, 2025, the life of 29-year-old Ian A. Mwaniki, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. Gunshots echoed through the 700 block of SW Western Avenue just before 8:00 p.m., prompting a swift response from local law enforcement. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mwaniki suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Despite the immediate efforts of medical personnel at the scene, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased. The incident marked the city's eighth homicide of the year.
The investigation into Mwaniki's death proceeded for nine days before a significant development occurred. On June 12, 2025, authorities arrested 19-year-old Pearson Carter III in connection with the fatal shooting. Carter was taken into custody and booked on several requested charges, including intentional second-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal carry of a weapon, and unlawful discharge of a firearm within city limits.
Following his arrest, the Shawnee County District Attorney's office formally charged Pearson Carter III with murder in connection with the death of Ian A. Mwaniki. While an arrest has been made, authorities have continued to describe the investigation as active as the case proceeds through the legal system.
