In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Louisville, Kentucky, 32-year-old Rachael Hughes was at a local laundromat on Bardstown Road. She was later seen leaving the establishment with a man identified as 27-year-old Michael Bullock. The two then drove to the Shawnee Park boat ramp in west Louisville. Surveillance footage from the area captured both of them getting out of the car.
As Hughes walked ahead of Bullock, he reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot her eight times, with bullets striking her in the head, neck, and torso.
After the shooting, Bullock left the scene in Hughes' vehicle. He later returned to the park on two separate occasions, this time accompanied by a juvenile. Together, they dragged Rachael's body into a nearby wooded area. It is also alleged that they disposed of her cell phone by throwing it into the river. Later that day, just before 3:30 p.m., her body was discovered by Louisville Metro Police. Her abandoned and ransacked car was found on 46th Street, not far from the park.
The investigation led by the LMPD's Homicide Unit quickly identified Michael Bullock as the primary suspect, thanks to the surveillance footage. He was arrested and charged with murder, robbery, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. A judge set his bond at one million dollars. Subsequently, a juvenile was also taken into custody, facing charges of receiving stolen property, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence for their role in the events that followed the murder. Hughes' mother described her as a giving and loving person who would do anything for a friend or neighbor in need.
