In a tragic turn of events on a Saturday morning in Indianapolis, 31-year-old Kenneth Lyles lost his life in a fatal shooting that also resulted in the death of another man and left a woman injured. The incident, which police believe stemmed from a robbery, unfolded around 9 a.m. on June 28, 2025, on the city's northeast side.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers in the vicinity of East 42nd Street and North Mitthoefer Road heard gunshots and quickly spotted two men
attempting to flee the area in a vehicle. Simultaneously, a report came in about a person shot in the 10000 block of East 42nd Street. Responding officers discovered two men and one woman who had sustained gunshot wounds. One of the men, later identified as Lyles, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, while the other man, 27-year-old Johnny Talley Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. The female victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
A police pursuit immediately followed the discovery of the victims. The suspects' vehicle struck an ambulance and another car near 10th Street and Shadeland Avenue. During the chase, a passenger exited the vehicle and was apprehended. The pursuit continued across town to the near west side, where officers executed a PIT maneuver in the 2600 block of West 16th Street. The suspects' car then hit several unoccupied vehicles before stopping.
Following a standoff where officers surrounded the vehicle and issued commands, the remaining suspect surrendered without further incident. The two men taken into custody were identified as Marquis Craig and Zay McDaniels. They are now facing a litany of charges, including murder, attempted murder, attempted robbery, and resisting law enforcement, for their alleged roles in the violent episode that claimed the lives of Kenneth Lyles and Johnny Talley Jr.
