On June 29, 2025, Michael Norris, 21, a white male from Hartford City, Indiana, was killed in a shooting that shattered the early-morning quiet of rural Blackford County. Deputies were called around 2:45 a.m. to a home along South County Road 500 East, south of Montpelier, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner identified him and indicated an autopsy would be conducted at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
What began as a large gathering spiraled into violence. Early reports tied the shooting to a fight that broke out at the party, with investigators from the Blackford County Major Incident Team working alongside Hartford City police and Indiana State Police as they tried to piece together who fired and why the night turned deadly.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities said two suspects were taken into custody, but their names were held back while investigators gathered evidence and conducted interviews.
