On the afternoon of April 30, 2022, law enforcement officials in Kokomo, Indiana, were summoned to the Villas de Fontenelle apartment complex following reports of a shooting. Officers arrived at the 200 block of Rainbow Circle shortly after 3:30 p.m. to investigate the disturbance. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the victim, identified as Jaylen Reed, lying in a courtyard area.
The 17-year-old Black male had sustained two gunshot wounds but was still conscious when authorities reached him.
In his final moments at the scene, Reed provided a crucial statement to the responding officers. He identified the shooter as his own 14-year-old brother, informing police that the younger sibling had pulled the trigger before fleeing the area on foot. Emergency medical personnel transported Reed to a local hospital for stabilization before he was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Indianapolis for higher-level trauma care. Despite these efforts, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that day.
Following the victim's statement, the Kokomo Police Department launched an immediate search for the suspect. Approximately one mile from the shooting scene, officers located the 14-year-old brother. He was taken into custody without incident. Although the suspect was apprehended quickly, investigators noted that the firearm used in the fatal altercation was not immediately recovered. The police did not publicly release the name of the minor due to his age.
The 14-year-old suspect was subsequently transported to the Kinsey Youth Center, a juvenile detention facility, where he was held on a preliminary charge of murder. The investigation was handled by the Kokomo Police Department, with detectives working to piece together the events leading up to the violence. Neighbors in the complex, including a woman visiting her mother nearby, reported hearing sounds distinct from typical gunfire and witnessing the chaotic aftermath as emergency vehicles flooded the quiet residential street. At the time of the initial reports, prosecutors had not yet disclosed whether the case would be waived to adult court.
