Do you know who murdered John Edward Harris? In the pre-dawn hours of a July morning, a confrontation at a Las Vegas apartment complex turned fatal for John Harris. A dedicated employee of the complex, he approached a man he believed to be trespassing on the property. What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation. During the struggle, the other man, Blake Valbracht, pinned Harris to the ground.
Harris eventually went limp.
Valbracht, a 28-year-old drifter, stated that he performed CPR on Harris and called for help once he realized Harris was unconscious. An initial police investigation led to Valbracht's arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. However, he was later released pending the coroner's determination of the cause of death. Security footage from the apartment complex captured the incident, providing investigators with a visual record of the events that transpired.
Months later, the Clark County Coroner's Office concluded that Harris's death was a homicide caused by positional asphyxia, meaning his position during the struggle prevented him from breathing. Despite this ruling, the District Attorney's office declined to file criminal charges against Valbracht. The decision was based on a police report which concluded that Valbracht had acted in self-defense. The report indicated that an unprovoked Harris had attacked Valbracht with a flashlight, and Valbracht was attempting to restrain him to prevent a further attack when Harris died. The lack of prosecution left those who knew Harris with lingering questions about the justice of the outcome.
