Vela Lindner, a 76-year-old female, had just returned to the comfort of her Las Vegas home on Glendale Circle on June 29, 1998. After a two-month stay at a rehabilitation center, she was looking forward to regaining her independence. The following day, June 30th, was filled with conversations with family and friends, the last of which took place around 4:30 in the afternoon. As evening approached, a sense of unease began to settle over her quiet neighborhood.
Around 8:00 p.m., a neighbor knocked on Vela's door but received no answer. This was unusual, and concern mounted. The neighbor contacted Vela's family, who then came to the residence with a key. Upon entering the home, they made a devastating discovery. Vela was found on the floor of her bedroom, and it was immediately apparent that a tragedy had occurred. There were clear signs of a violent struggle within the master bedroom.
Investigators arriving at the scene determined that an intruder had gained access to the home by breaking through a bedroom window. The encounter with Vela had turned fatal.
