An attempt to act as a peacemaker during a bar fight proved fatal for Jereme Dillingham, a 28-year-old Black man, in the early morning hours of July 17, 2025. The night began at the Mucky Duck Pub on the south side of Indianapolis, where another patron, 21-year-old Kaeden Douglas, became aggressive and belligerent after several hours of drinking. Witnesses said Douglas, who had a reputation for causing trouble at the bar, suddenly threw a chair and began shoving another man.
Dillingham, who was seated nearby, stepped in to de-escalate the conflict. After a brief exchange, the two men appeared to make peace, shaking hands and hugging before Dillingham walked away.
The calm was short-lived. Bar staff, including a bouncer, removed Douglas from the establishment for his aggressive behavior. As he was being forced to leave, Douglas fought with the bouncer and was overheard telling staff, "You all are dead men." Once in the parking lot, his hostility continued. Witnesses reported hearing Douglas repeatedly shouting racial slurs, including the N-word. He got into his car, but the confrontations were not over.
From his vehicle, Douglas began screaming racial slurs at Dillingham, yelling for him to come over to his car. A man who was with Dillingham heard what sounded like a gun being cocked and warned him to stay back. Dillingham approached the passenger-side window of Douglas’s car anyway. After Douglas again shouted a racial slur, Dillingham reached toward the open window. At that moment, Douglas fired a single shot, striking Dillingham, and sped away.
Patrons and bystanders rushed to Dillingham's side, attempting to provide first aid until emergency services arrived. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, but he died from the gunshot wound a short time later.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigators used witness statements and surveillance footage to quickly identify Kaeden Douglas as the shooter. A SWAT team located and arrested him at a home later the same day without incident. Upon his arrest, police recovered a handgun from his vehicle and another inside the residence. During questioning, Douglas provided inconsistent statements. He initially claimed to have no memory of the events after being kicked out of the bar, but later said he acted in self-defense and was in fear for his life, though he could not explain why.
Prosecutors charged Douglas with murder. Citing the suspect's repeated use of vile and racist language before the fatal encounter, the Marion County Prosecutor stated that prejudice and discrimination drove the violent crime. Following a trial, a jury found Kaeden Douglas guilty of murder.
In August 2026, a judge sentenced Douglas, then 22, to 55 years in prison. The sentence consisted of 50 years for the murder conviction and an additional five years for a firearm enhancement.
