In a tragic turn of events on the Fourth of July, 33-year-old Cody Chavous, a male resident of Austell, Georgia, was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking at a Cobb County apartment complex. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at the 300 Riverside Apartments, formerly known as Concepts 21 Six Flags, located in Mableton. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Chavous with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led authorities to 23-year-old Damaree M. Baker. According to arrest warrants, Baker allegedly entered Chavous's vehicle with a pistol and demanded to steal it. When Chavous refused to comply, he was shot four times. Baker is also accused of attempting to carjack other individuals at the same location, but they reportedly fought him off, and he fled the scene. Another man was also shot in the face during the string of incidents and required surgery for his injuries.
Nearly a week after the fatal encounter, Damaree Baker was arrested and taken into custody at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. He is facing a series of serious charges, including murder, three counts of hijacking, aggravated assault with intent to murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and multiple counts of armed robbery. The 300 Riverside Apartments, where the shooting took place, has been identified as one of metro Atlanta's persistently dangerous complexes due to a history of serious crimes. Chavous was a father to three children.
