In the early morning hours of a Thursday in Indianapolis, a domestic disturbance shattered the quiet of a neighborhood on North Ritter Avenue. The life of 60-year-old Nola B. McNary, a female, was tragically cut short in an act of violence that stemmed from this dispute. On July 24, 2025, Nola was shot and critically injured inside a residence. Emergency responders rushed her to a nearby hospital, but her injuries proved to be fatal, and she succumbed to them shortly after her arrival.
The incident, which began as a domestic violence disturbance, quickly escalated into a homicide investigation.
The suspect in Nola's death was identified as her 76-year-old husband, Walter McNary. After the shooting, he fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a search by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Less than an hour later, officers located Walter's vehicle and a pursuit began. During the chase, Walter fired at the pursuing officers on three separate occasions, striking two police cars. The pursuit weaved through several city streets before concluding near Crown Hill Cemetery.
When the chase ended, Walter McNary emerged from his vehicle and pointed a rifle at the officers. In response, an officer fired, striking him. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries. Investigators found a rifle next to him and another firearm inside his car. It was later revealed that Walter McNary was a convicted felon with a history of domestic violence, including a 2012 conviction for an incident involving Nola where he had hit, choked, and threatened to kill her. For that offense, he had received probation and was ordered to complete domestic violence counseling. Family members stated that Nola had been staying at her sister's house to get away from him prior to her death.
