In the early hours of July 11, 2025, 30-year-old Kalani Mason Jr., a man from Bakersfield, was found mortally wounded on the 1500 block of Padre Street in east Bakersfield. Police were called at about 2:15 a.m. and discovered two men with severe injuries; Kalani Mason Jr., age 30, had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second man suffering from stab wounds was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition and later listed as stable.
