Jayviontae Cox, 14, a Black male, was at home on East Cherry Street in Evansville on the afternoon of September 4, 2025, when a friend handling a handgun believed to be unloaded pulled the trigger and the weapon fired. First responders found him mortally wounded; the Vanderburgh County Coroner later confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene.
