On a tragic day in Evansville, Indiana, Richard Alan Popp, a 41-year-old male, was killed on Sunday, February 11, 2018. His death was part of a double murder-suicide rooted in domestic violence. Popp, a resident of Worthville, Kentucky, was fatally shot in his car on Morgan Avenue near Highway 41.
The investigation revealed that Popp was an acquaintance of 32-year-old Maygen Sears, who was also killed that day.
Maygen Sears had been seeking a divorce from her estranged husband, 33-year-old Daniel Sears, and had obtained a restraining order against him due to threats he had made. The day before the killings, she had contacted the police about his threats, which led to police searching for him on preliminary charges of intimidation and invasion of privacy.
Authorities identified Daniel Sears as the suspect in the shooting deaths of both his estranged wife and Richard Popp. Popp was apparently assisting Maygen Sears with her domestic situation. After killing both victims, Daniel Sears fled the scene.
Later that day, law enforcement located Daniel Sears' vehicle at the Vanderburgh 4-H Center. Inside, they found him deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police believe he acted alone in the violent acts and with his death, the investigation into the deaths of Maygen Sears and Richard Popp concluded, as the sole suspect had taken his own life.
