In the late morning of June 10, 2025, a sense of unease settled over the 800 block of South Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock, Arkansas. At approximately 10:54 a.m., the Little Rock Police Department received a call that would unravel a tragedy. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find 19-year-old Kayla Payne, a Black female, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Paramedics acted quickly, rushing her to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life.
Despite their efforts, Kayla Payne succumbed to her injuries a short time later, her life cut short by an act of violence.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a swift and determined investigation by the Little Rock Police Department's Homicide Detectives. As they processed the scene and gathered evidence, a suspect began to emerge from the chaos. By the end of that same day, their investigation led them to 28-year-old Quran Johnson of Little Rock. He was taken into custody and questioned by detectives.
Following the interrogation, Quran Johnson was arrested and charged with the capital murder of Kayla Payne. The Pulaski County Coroner's Office arranged for her body to be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy to formally determine the cause of her death. As the legal process against Johnson began, the community was left to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss of a young woman.
