In the late spring of 2025, the community of Arab, Alabama, was shaken by the discovery of the body of 39-year-old David Pierce Merrit. On the morning of May 30th, a passing motorist made a grim finding on the Whitesburg Bridge, a body wrapped in a bloody quilt with a garbage bag covering the head. Investigators who responded to the scene on the north side of the bridge along U.S.
231/431 determined that the male victim, later identified as Merrit through fingerprint analysis, had died from a gunshot wound to the head. Evidence at the scene suggested that the perpetrator had attempted to dispose of the body in the Tennessee River.
The investigation quickly led authorities to 55-year-old Daniel Ray Shelton, who had been living with Merrit. A search of the residence they shared uncovered significant evidence, including blood spatter on the bedroom walls and carpet, a bloody phone charging cord, and a broken lamp. Investigators also found garbage bags in the kitchen with the same serial number as the one found over Merrit's head. Shelton's estranged wife informed authorities that he had admitted to an altercation with Merrit and had asked her to wash his clothes afterward. Friends and family remember Merrit as a beloved musician, traveler, and storyteller, with one friend stating, 'The world is really missing a bright spirit now.'
Following the discovery and initial investigation, Shelton was located by the Cullman Police Department and taken in for questioning by the Huntsville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit. In a recorded statement, Shelton confessed to the crime, stating that during an argument, Merrit had thrown a lamp at him. He claimed that after Merrit turned away, he picked up a. 22-caliber gun and shot him in the back of the head. Shelton admitted to disposing of Merrit's phone, wallet, and ID in a nearby body of water before wrapping the body in a quilt and leaving it on the bridge. He was arrested and booked into the Madison County Jail on charges of murder and abuse of a corpse. Court documents revealed a history of domestic violence between the two men, and at the time of the murder, Shelton was also facing a pending felony assault charge in Tennessee for allegedly pushing Merrit from a moving vehicle.
