In the early afternoon of June 1, 2025, a fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Tucson, Arizona apartment complex at 201 West Blacklidge Drive. The incident resulted in the death of 18-year-old Braden Johnson Begay. When law enforcement and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department arrived at the scene following reports of a shooting, they discovered the unresponsive male suffering from gunshot trauma.
Officers rendered immediate first aid until paramedics arrived, but their life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and Begay was pronounced deceased at the location.
The suspect had fled the scene before the arrival of first responders. Shortly after the initial 911 calls, another report came in about a male with a gunshot wound at a nearby residence. This individual was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives with the Tucson Police Department's Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to both locations to continue their investigation.
Through witness interviews and the collection of evidence, which included surveillance footage, investigators determined that the injured male was the suspect who had left the scene of the shooting. The investigation revealed that the suspect and Begay had arranged to meet in the apartment complex parking lot for a narcotics-related transaction. During this meeting, a confrontation occurred, leading to an exchange of gunfire as both individuals were armed. Both Braden Begay and the suspect were struck during the shootout.
The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Manuel Phillip Navarro. Following the investigation, he was charged with 1st Degree Murder, Narcotic Sales, Possession of a Weapon During a Narcotic Offense, and Armed Robbery. After being treated for his injuries, Manuel Navarro was booked into the Pima County Jail, where he is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.
