In the late hours of a Sunday evening in east Birmingham, a personal dispute escalated into a fatal encounter for Demetrius Cortez Trannon. On June 22, 2025, the 34-year-old man was involved in a physical altercation in the 8000 block of Fifth Avenue South. The argument took a tragic turn around 11:25 p.m. when a shooting transpired. Birmingham Police, who were already en route to the location due to the reported fight, arrived to a grave scene.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered
Trannon unresponsive on the front porch of a residence. He had sustained a gunshot wound. Emergency responders with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:42 p.m. The individual involved in the altercation with Trannon remained at the location and was taken to police headquarters for questioning by authorities.
Following an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office reviewed the evidence presented. The district attorney ultimately determined that the use of lethal force in this instance was justified. Consequently, the shooting death of Demetrius Cortez Trannon was ruled as a justifiable homicide, and the case was not treated as a criminal matter by the Birmingham Police Department.
