In the quiet college town of Moscow, Idaho, the night of November 13, 2022, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. Among the victims of a brutal attack in an off-campus home was Ethan Chapin, a 20-year-old Caucasian male and a student at the University of Idaho. He was spending the night with his girlfriend, Xana Kernodle, at her residence. The evening for Chapin and Kernodle had been a typical one for college students; they had attended a party at the nearby Sigma Chi fraternity house
before returning to the King Road residence at approximately 1:45 a.m.
In the early morning hours, between approximately 4:00 and 4:25 a.m., an intruder entered the three-story home. The attacker moved through the house, fatally stabbing Chapin and Kernodle on the second floor. Also murdered in the attack were Kernodle's roommates, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, who were found in a bedroom on the third floor. The Latah County Coroner later confirmed that all four victims died from multiple stab wounds in a homicide. Two other roommates on the first and second floors of the house were unharmed, apparently sleeping through the tragic events.
The initial days of the investigation were marked by a lack of suspects and a murder weapon, leading to a palpable sense of fear and uncertainty in the small community. Law enforcement described the killings as a targeted attack but did not immediately identify a motive. The case captivated the nation as investigators meticulously pieced together evidence. A breakthrough came when authorities began searching for a white Hyundai Elantra that was seen near the crime scene.
On December 30, 2022, more than six weeks after the murders, a suspect was arrested. Bryan Christopher Kohberger, a 28-year-old Ph.D. student in criminology at the nearby Washington State University, was taken into custody at his parents' home in Pennsylvania. The arrest was the result of a combination of evidence, including DNA found on a knife sheath left at the scene, cell phone data, and surveillance footage. Kohberger was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary.
Initially, Kohberger stood silent at his arraignment, and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. However, in a significant development, he later changed his plea to guilty on all charges as part of an agreement to avoid the death penalty. Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional ten years for the burglary charge.
