In the quiet town of Moscow, Idaho, the afternoon of January 10, 2015, was shattered by a sudden and senseless act of violence that claimed the life of David Trail, a 76-year-old Caucasian male. Trail, a respected local businessman, was in his office when a gunman entered and opened fire. The attacker, later identified as John Lee, shot Trail multiple times.
A client who was with Trail at the time, Michael Chin, was also shot and wounded but survived.
The tranquility of the community was further eroded as the gunman continued his rampage. After leaving Trail's office, Lee drove to a local Arby's restaurant where he fatally shot the manager, Belinda Niebuhr. His final stop was the home of his adoptive mother, Terri Grzebielski, whom he also murdered. The string of shootings prompted a high-speed chase as law enforcement pursued Lee, who fled the area. The chase, which reached speeds of over 100 mph, ended when Lee's car went off the road outside of Steptoe.
An investigation into the tragic events revealed that the perpetrator was 29-year-old John Lee, who had previously been known as Kane Grzebielski. Lee was subsequently arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. During legal proceedings, it was disclosed that Lee had a history of paranoid thoughts and hearing voices.
In March 2016, John Lee entered an Alford plea, not admitting guilt but acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence for a conviction. This plea was part of an agreement that spared him the death penalty. In May of that same year, he was sentenced to three life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of David Trail, Terri Grzebielski, and Belinda Niebuhr, along with a 15-year sentence for the aggravated assault of Michael Chin. Subsequent appeals by Lee to withdraw his plea and for a reduced sentence were denied.
