Lee Newbill, a 48-year-old White male, was a police officer with the Moscow Police Department. His life was cut short on the night of May 19, 2007, in what has been described as a planned and deliberate attack on law enforcement in Moscow, Idaho. The evening's tragic events began when a man named Jason Hamilton launched an assault on the Latah County Courthouse.
Hamilton positioned himself across the street and opened fire on the emergency dispatch center, a calculated move to draw officers into his line of fire.
Responding to the call of duty, Officer Newbill rushed to the scene to assist his fellow officers. As he and Officer Bill Shields crossed a street near the courthouse, Hamilton unleashed a barrage of bullets in their direction. Newbill was struck by the gunfire. In his final moments, his concern was for his partner, yelling for him to get down and take cover. A sheriff's deputy bravely moved to pull the fallen officer out of the immediate danger but was also shot and wounded in the process. Lee Newbill succumbed to his injuries, becoming the first police officer in the history of the Moscow Police Department to be killed in the line of duty.
The violent rampage did not end with the shooting at the courthouse. The suspect, Jason Hamilton, then fled to the nearby First Presbyterian Church. Inside the church, he murdered a church caretaker named Paul Bauer. As law enforcement surrounded the church, Hamilton took his own life. Subsequent investigations revealed that Hamilton's violent spree had started even earlier that night at his home, where he had shot and killed his wife, Crystal Hamilton, before heading to the courthouse. In the end, Jason Hamilton was responsible for the deaths of three innocent people before committing suicide. There were no arrests to be made, as the sole suspect was deceased. The community of Moscow was left to mourn the loss of Officer Newbill, a man remembered for his dedication and heroism.
