On a crisp autumn day in New York City, a celebratory reunion turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. Ariel Erlij, a 48-year-old Jewish man from Argentina, was in the city with a group of his childhood friends. They had come to the United States to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their graduation from the General San Martín Polytechnic Institute in Rosario. Erlij, a successful steel company owner, had been the driving force behind the trip, even helping to pay for some of his friends' travel expenses. The group of friends was enjoying a bike ride on a path alongside the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan on October 31, 2017, a day that would end in tragedy.
The joyful atmosphere was shattered when a rented Home Depot pickup truck, driven by Sayfullo Saipov, veered onto the busy bike path. Saipov deliberately targeted cyclists and pedestrians, turning a scenic route into a trail of destruction. Erlij and four of his friends were struck and killed in the attack. In total, the rampage claimed the lives of eight people and left many others injured. The attack ended when Saipov crashed the truck into a school bus. He then exited the vehicle, brandishing what appeared to be firearms, which were later identified as a paintball gun and a pellet gun. He was shot in the abdomen by a police officer and taken into custody.
In the aftermath of the attack, it was revealed that Sayfullo Saipov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan, had been inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group. A note proclaiming his allegiance to the group was found in his truck. The act was immediately investigated as an act of terrorism. Saipov was charged with multiple counts of murder and other offenses. Following a trial, a federal jury found him guilty on all charges. While prosecutors sought the death penalty, the jury could not unanimously agree on the sentence. As a result, Saipov was sentenced to eight consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, in addition to 260 years in prison. He is currently incarcerated at the ADX Florence supermax prison.
