On a tragic day in Detroit, Michigan, 22-year-old Jamon D. Thomas lost his life in a senseless act of violence. On Monday, February 26, 2018, Jamon was in his home on Faust Avenue with his girlfriend, Shatika Yates, and their infant daughter when his cousin, George Anthony Davis, arrived.
The morning was shattered by the sound of gunshots. Awakened by the noise, Shatika heard Jamon's desperate pleas, 'I'm your cousin, I'm your cousin.'
In a panic, she grabbed their baby and sought refuge in the attic of their home. From the darkness of her hiding place, she listened to Davis's footsteps as he moved through the house. When she finally emerged after he had gone, she found Jamon on the floor, struggling for his life. She knelt beside him, begging him to hold on, but helplessly watched as he took his last breath. After the horrifying ordeal, Shatika saw Davis drive away in her car and ran to a nearby drug store to call for help and notify Jamon's family.
Jamon was a victim of a wider rampage by his cousin. Before arriving at Jamon's home, Davis had already shot and killed three other individuals at a gas station. Family members later revealed that Davis had been displaying signs of severe paranoia and hallucinations in the week leading up to the violent spree. The tragic chain of events ended when George Anthony Davis, the suspect in four murders, took his own life in Ohio.
