On November 18, 1972, the battered, nude body of 12-year-old African American female Loretta Melton was found in a vacant lot behind 8213 Hough Avenue NE in Cleveland, Ohio. The body was discovered at approximately 8:00 p.m. by two young boys who had been playing in the area. The field was located just four blocks from Loretta's home at 1770 East 87th Street, where she lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Love Melton, and her ten siblings—six sisters and four brothers.
