In the late afternoon of August 14, 2009, the body of James Mendola, a 41-year-old Caucasian male, was discovered in a brushy area near U.S. Highway 95 and Desert Inn Road in Las Vegas. Mendola, who was believed to be homeless, had been severely beaten and sustained fatal wounds to his head.
