On August 14, 2009, James Mendola, aged 41, was found brutally beaten and dead near a Desert Inn in Las Vegas. He was one of several homeless individuals targeted in a series of violent attacks over a span of a few months. Police arrested a suspect, Steven Montoya, who was accused of beating Mendola during an altercation. This tragic homicide was part of a disturbing pattern of violence against homeless people in the area during that period, causing fear among the local homeless community.
