A dispute on a Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas tragically ended the life of 19-year-old Mauricio Gaston, a Black male. The events unfolded on May 10, 2020, at the Emerald Springs apartment complex on North Nellis Boulevard, a place described as a friend's residence for Gaston. He had arrived with a group of people, but he alone went up to a second-floor apartment.
Inside the apartment, a confrontation began between Gaston and the male resident.
The fight moved from inside the apartment to a porch near a concrete staircase. During the altercation, the resident, a man in his late 20s, was pushed down the stairs. After his fall, the resident reported that Gaston's friends, who had remained downstairs, approached him. It was at this point that the resident fired several shots at them.
Following the initial confrontation with the resident, Gaston entered the apartment and locked the door. Inside with him were the resident's girlfriend and child. The resident managed to force his way back into his home and fired multiple rounds at Gaston.
Police were called to the scene around 4:45 p.m. where they found Mauricio Gaston had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his death was officially ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office. The resident was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained from his fall. The group of individuals who had accompanied Gaston to the apartment complex had fled before authorities arrived. As of the days immediately following the incident, it remained unclear if the shooter would face any criminal charges, and no arrests had been announced.
