In the early morning hours of March 26, 2018, the life of 27-year-old Darin King, a Black / African American man, was tragically cut short in an east Las Vegas home. The incident unfolded around 5:15 a.m. on the 100 block of Sacramento Drive, near Charleston and Lamb boulevards.
The person accused of the shooting was 20-year-old Alisha Rucker, who was described as a friend of King.
According to police reports, the events leading to the fatal shooting began when Rucker woke her sister, wanting to use her phone. Rucker claimed she had been jumped at Boulder Station and wanted her sister's help in finding the assailants, a request her sister denied. Shortly after, the sister heard Rucker arguing with King outside the house.
During the argument, King was reportedly heard saying, "if you're going to shoot me, shoot me." His sister then heard the sound of a gun clicking, followed by a single gunshot. Rucker then went back into her sister’s bedroom and confessed to shooting King in the face. By the time police arrived at the scene, Rucker had already fled. Investigators found a 9mm cartridge case at the location.
Later that morning, around 8:03 a.m., the Nevada Highway Patrol located Rucker's Chevrolet Impala near Interstate 15 and Flamingo Road. Troopers managed to corner the vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station near Mandalay Bay. While another person in the vehicle exited, Rucker, who was in the passenger seat and armed, refused to surrender. Despite troopers' attempts to de-escalate the situation, she shot herself in the head. Rucker was subsequently booked in absentia on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon.
