In the winter of 2017, the life of 13-year-old African-American male Aaron Jones came to a tragic end in a one-bedroom apartment in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though his body was discovered on April 25, 2017, the young boy had been missing for months, a fact that went unreported to the police until a child protective services worker filed a report that April.
The grim discovery of his remains, wrapped in a blanket and tarp under a pile of rocks in a desert lot, was made by his own cousins who had been searching for him.
The investigation into Aaron's death quickly centered on his father, Paul Darell Jones, and his girlfriend, Latoya Williams-Miley. It was revealed that Aaron, along with many of his siblings, lived in squalid conditions with the couple. Accounts from his siblings painted a horrific picture of abuse. They told investigators that Aaron was forced to stand against a wall for long periods, beaten, and deprived of food and sleep. Other children in the home were reportedly encouraged to taunt him. The final act of violence occurred when Paul Jones struck Aaron, causing him to fall and hit his head. When Aaron stopped breathing, his father and Williams-Miley placed him in the shower in an attempt to revive him, but it was too late.
Following his death, Paul Jones told the other children that Aaron had run away. He then wrapped the boy's body and buried it in the nearby desert. Jones later admitted to police that he had hit his son and disposed of his body. Both Paul Jones and Latoya Williams-Miley were arrested and charged with murder and child abuse. The case brought to light a long history of interactions between the family and child protective services, with numerous reports of abuse and neglect having been filed over the years. Ultimately, Paul Jones pleaded guilty to the murder of his son.
