Wendie Rochelle Prescott, a 22-year-old African American woman, was found dead on December 24, 1996, in her apartment at the Peartree Apartments in Arlington, Texas. She worked as a teacher's aide for second-grade students at Erma Nash Elementary and was known for her warm personality and dedication to her family and students. On Christmas Eve, Wendie had planned to go shopping with her sister and visit her grandmother, but when she failed to show up, her family became concerned.
Her aunt and uncle went to her apartment shortly after midnight and discovered her lifeless body face down in a half-filled bathtub.
The scene was deeply disturbing. The 22-year-old African American woman had been bound with duct tape, sexually assaulted, and strangled. The brutality of the crime shocked the community and bore a chilling resemblance to the murder of another woman, Christine Vu, who had been killed in the same apartment complex just three months earlier. Vu, a 26-year-old elementary school teacher, had also been found bound and strangled in her bathtub. The similarities between the two cases led investigators to believe they were the work of the same perpetrator.
Despite collecting fingerprints from both crime scenes, investigators were initially unable to identify a suspect due to the limitations of forensic technology at the time. The case remained unsolved for several years until a breakthrough came in 1999. A man named Dale Devon Scheanette was arrested for burglarizing a car audio shop in DeSoto, Texas. His fingerprints were entered into a database and matched those found at the scenes of both Wendie Prescott's and Christine Vu's murders.
Further investigation revealed that Dale Scheanette had lived in the same apartment complex as both victims. He was linked to multiple other sexual assaults and became known as the “Bathtub Killer.” In 2003, Scheanette was convicted of capital murder for the death of Wendie Prescott. Although he was charged in the murder of Christine Vu, he was never tried for that case. Scheanette was executed in 2009. His conviction brought a measure of closure to the families of the victims, though the pain of their loss remained profound.
