On February 3, 1997, 10-year-old Hispanic female Jessica Muniz was found dead alongside her mother, Yolanda Gutierrez, in their Chicago apartment. Firefighters responding to a blaze discovered their bodies on a burned bed. Investigators quickly determined the fire had been deliberately set using a liquid accelerant. Evidence at the scene, including restraints on Jessica’s wrist and pour patterns on the rug, pointed to a calculated and violent crime.
Autopsies revealed that both victims
had suffered brutal injuries. Jessica Muniz had a deep incised wound across her neck, nearly decapitating her. She also sustained a stab wound to her shoulder and had burns covering approximately 75% of her body. Forensic examination indicated that the 10-year-old Hispanic girl had been sexually assaulted. A tampon with the applicator still attached was found in her body, and DNA evidence confirmed the presence of semen in her oral and rectal swabs. Her mother, Yolanda, had also been sexually assaulted and died from a sharp-force neck wound.
