In the summer of 1987, a grim discovery unfolded in a remote wooded area near Molalla, Oregon, revealing a series of brutal murders. Among the victims was Lisa Marie Mock, a 23-year-old Caucasian woman who had moved to Portland from Berkeley, California, the previous year. Her life had taken a difficult turn, as she reportedly struggled with heroin addiction and had been arrested for prostitution.
She was last seen in July 1987, and her father reported her missing on August 26 of that same year. Her remains were later found in a shallow grave in the Molalla Forest, one of several victims of a horrific killing spree.
The investigation into the gruesome discoveries in the Molalla Forest led authorities to Dayton Leroy Rogers, who would become known as the "Molalla Forest Killer." Rogers was apprehended in August 1987 after he was witnessed stabbing another woman, Jennifer Lisa Smith, in a parking lot. Eyewitnesses courageously followed his vehicle and provided his license plate number to the police, which led directly to his arrest. This arrest proved to be the key to unlocking the mystery of the bodies found in the forest. Evidence found at the Molalla crime scene, including miniature vodka bottles and orange juice containers that Rogers was known to carry, linked him to the murders of the women found there.
The victims in the Molalla Forest, including Lisa Marie Mock, had been subjected to torture and mutilation, with many suffering multiple stab wounds. The horrific details of the crimes painted a picture of a sadistic killer. Dayton Leroy Rogers, a man with a long history of violent offenses, was ultimately convicted for the murder of Jennifer Smith in 1988 and sentenced to life in prison. He was later tried and convicted for the murders of six of the seven women found in the Molalla Forest, including Lisa Marie Mock. For these heinous crimes, he was sentenced to death. Despite numerous appeals that have overturned his death sentence on multiple occasions, he remains incarcerated.
