In the spring of 2015, a violent tragedy unfolded in Portland, Oregon, forever altering the lives of a young family. Sut-Leng Susie Chang a 41-year-old Asian female, was killed on April 10, 2015, in a brutal act of gun violence that also claimed the life of her brother-in-law and left her husband fighting for his life. The shocking crime, which took place in an apartment on Southeast 85th Avenue near Division Street, was not a random act but was connected to the family's involvement in the
medical marijuana industry.
On that fateful Friday night, Susie Pham, her husband Andrew Pham, and his brother Dat "Gary" Pham, aged 33, were attacked in what was described as an execution-style shooting. Both Susie and Gary were shot in the head and died from their injuries. Andrew Pham was also shot and critically wounded in the assault. Miraculously, the couple's 13-week-old baby, who was present during the horrific event, was physically unharmed and later cared for by grandparents.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led law enforcement to a suspect, 26-year-old Darnell Valentino Breedlove, also known as Colby Robinson, of Dallas, Texas. A warrant was issued for his arrest on two counts of aggravated murder. The search for Breedlove culminated in a tense series of events in Texas. U.S. Marshals had him under surveillance at a Days Inn motel in DeSoto, a city south of Dallas.
Breedlove managed to evade initial capture by jumping out of a motel window. A manhunt ensued, with police conducting a door-to-door search. He was later spotted at a 7-Eleven convenience store and fled in a U-Haul truck. After a police pursuit, Breedlove abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into a residential neighborhood. It was there that he was confronted by DeSoto police officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. Breedlove was shot and pronounced deceased at the scene, bringing a violent end to the search for the man responsible for the deaths of Susie and Gary Pham.
