On December 25, 2016, 24-year-old Katelynn May Armand, known as Kate, was tragically killed by her estranged husband, 30-year-old James Tylka, in King City, Oregon. The couple, who had recently separated and were undergoing divorce proceedings, shared a young daughter. Kate was found lying dead in the street after reports of gunshots near Tylka's residence, where he had been living with his mother in a senior citizen neighborhood.
Following the shooting, Tylka fled the scene, prompting a police pursuit. Oregon State Police Trooper Nic Cederberg, a seven-year veteran, engaged in the chase and attempted to apprehend Tylka. During the confrontation, Tylka shot Cederberg multiple times, critically injuring him. Despite his injuries, Cederberg returned fire, and Tylka was ultimately shot dead by responding officers in a cul-de-sac after he continued to engage them. Trooper Cederberg underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigations revealed that the couple's separation involved disputes over child custody and support payments. Additionally, Tylka had a history of legal battles with an ex-wife over custody and child support, during which concerns about his increasingly irrational and aggressive behavior were documented. Reports also indicated that Tylka had previously expressed suicidal thoughts, leading to police involvement.
Kate Armand was a mother of two and worked as a medical technician at an Oregon senior living center. Her untimely death on Christmas Day left her family and community in shock and mourning. A celebration of her life was held on January 7, 2016, at the Kelso/Longview Elks Lodge in Kelso, Washington.
