George Morber Sr., an 80-year-old white male, was found dead in his home in Gorham, Illinois, on June 15, 1999. His residence was located just 100 yards from the railroad tracks, a detail that would later prove significant in the investigation. Morber was shot in the head with a shotgun, a brutal act that left the community in shock. Alongside him, his 52-year-old daughter, Carolyn Frederick, was also found murdered. She had suffered severe head trauma, reportedly beaten with the same shotgun used to kill her father.
Authorities quickly connected the killings to a larger pattern of crimes occurring near railway lines. The suspect, Rafael Resendez-Ramirez, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was already wanted for multiple murders across several states. Investigators determined that Resendez-Ramirez had been traveling the country by illegally hopping freight trains, committing violent crimes along the way. His fingerprints were discovered on Morber's abandoned truck, which was later found in a school parking lot in Cairo, Illinois, approximately 60 miles south of Gorham.
The FBI placed Resendez-Ramirez on its Ten Most Wanted list, increasing the reward for information leading to his arrest. Reports of sightings flooded in, with one witness recalling seeing him staring through a laundromat window in Percy, Illinois, just days after the murders. Authorities charged him with murder and home invasion in Illinois, as well as unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The case intensified as law enforcement agencies across multiple states worked together to track his movements and prevent further killings.
The community of Gorham was left shaken by the senseless violence. Residents lived in fear, knowing that the suspect remained at large and could strike again.
