Fannie Whitney Byers, an 81-year-old white woman, was found brutally murdered on December 10, 1998, in her home in the small town of Carl, Georgia. Her residence was located near the CSX railroad tracks, and she was known in the community as a quiet, elderly woman who rarely left home unless someone gave her a ride.
