Lateisha Shunterria Stewart, a 32-year-old Black woman from Macon, Georgia, was found late on the night of September 25, 2021, slumped in the driver’s seat of a Hyundai Sonata in the driveway of a home on the 1500 block of Berkshire Drive. Deputies had been called to the scene just before midnight for reports of an unresponsive person in a vehicle, and when they arrived, they discovered that Stewart had been shot in the upper body.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Ronnie Miley. In the first public accounts, the killing felt sudden and stark, the kind of violence that leaves behind more questions than answers, with investigators saying they did not yet know what led up to the shooting or who was responsible.
In the days that followed, the public picture of Stewart became fuller and more human. Loved ones remembered her not simply as a homicide victim, but as a mother and educator whose life revolved around children and whose hopes stretched toward opening her own daycare.
