On August 5, 2005, Danielle Subjects, a 28-year-old African American woman and mother of two, was found dead in her apartment located at 10965 South Gessner Road in southwest Houston. Earlier that morning, she had dropped off her children at daycare and returned home to prepare for work. Her roommate discovered her lifeless body in the bathtub around 1:00 p.m.
Investigators determined that Danielle had been sexually assaulted and robbed, with the official cause of death pending an autopsy by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office.
Danielle's murder bore striking similarities to the killing of another Houston woman, 25-year-old Mandy Rubin, who was found dead in her apartment bathtub on February 4, 2006. Both women were single mothers residing in southwest Houston apartment complexes located just four blocks apart. Investigators noted that both victims had been strangled and beaten, and their bodies were posed in a similar manner, suggesting a possible connection between the cases.
The investigation led authorities to suspect Edward George McGregor, a 33-year-old African American man, in connection with the murders. McGregor had previously been charged with the 1990 murder of Kim Wildman in Missouri City, Texas, a case in which DNA evidence linked him to the crime. Further investigation revealed that McGregor had lived in the same apartment complex as Mandy Rubin and was acquainted with both Rubin and Subjects. Although McGregor voluntarily provided a DNA sample during the investigation into Rubin's murder, he was not immediately charged in connection with the deaths of Rubin or Subjects.
As of the latest available information, Edward George McGregor remains a suspect in the murders of Danielle Subjects and Mandy Rubin. Houston police continue to investigate the cases and are reviewing other unsolved homicides for potential links to McGregor, who is believed to have committed additional violent crimes against women over a span of 16 years.
