On December 14, 2024, 14-year-old Azirya Bankhead tragically lost her life during a mass shooting at a makeshift nightclub in northeast Houston, Texas. The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. at an unoccupied business on the 10100 block of Jensen Drive, near the Eastex Freeway. The venue, known as the Curfew Club, was hosting a pop-up party advertised on social media as the "hottest teen club in Houston," attracting a large crowd of predominantly teenage attendees.
The chaotic scene unfolded when an unidentified assailant, described by witnesses as a tall, thin man dressed entirely in black, including a hooded sweatshirt and mask, opened fire into the crowd. In addition to Azirya, 16-year-old King Randle was also fatally shot. Four other teenage girls, aged between 13 and 19, sustained injuries; the 13-year-old remains in critical condition, while the others are reported to be in serious to stable conditions.
Upon arrival, Houston Police officers encountered a frantic environment with attendees fleeing in all directions, leaving behind personal belongings and evidence of the unregulated event. The venue lacked proper permits and security measures, complicating the investigation due to the absence of surveillance footage.
