In the early morning hours of July 13, 2015, a tragedy began to unfold that would ultimately claim the life of 38-year-old Jrome Gravely, an African-American male. At approximately 3:00 a.m., Gravely was walking down D Street, near Lake Mead Boulevard in Las Vegas, when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire. The sound of multiple gunshots and squealing tires pierced the quiet of the morning. Gravely was struck by the gunfire and discovered in the 1900 block of D Street.
First responders arrived at the scene and transported Gravely to the University Medical Center Trauma Center for treatment of his gunshot wounds. For 18 days, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on July 31, 2015, turning a violent assault into a homicide investigation.
Investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have been working to piece together the events of that fateful morning. Detectives are uncertain whether Gravely was the intended target or the victim of a random act of violence. A key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation is a silver or gray full-size SUV that was seen speeding away from the area immediately after the shooting.
As of early 2019, the case has grown cold, and no arrests have been made in connection with Jrome Gravely's murder. Law enforcement officials have made public pleas for information, urging anyone with even the smallest detail to come forward. The community has held events to remember Gravely and to encourage witnesses who may have information to break their silence and help bring justice to his family. Despite these efforts, the suspect or suspects involved in his death remain at large.
