Frida Castillo, a 20-year-old Hispanic woman from Laredo, Texas, tragically lost her life on March 15, 2025, in a violent incident that unfolded during a police standoff. The young woman had previously been involved in a tumultuous relationship with 27-year-old Fernando Machado, who had a history of domestic violence against her. Reports indicate that Machado had attempted to strangle Castillo in a prior domestic assault case dating back to May 20, 2024.
Despite the severity of the attack, Castillo had later forgiven Machado and sought to drop the charges against him.
On the afternoon of March 15, 2025, a confrontation erupted in the 3900 block of Bannock Lane, where Machado fatally shot Castillo. The violence did not end there—her 22-year-old brother, Jorge Castillo, and their 44-year-old mother, Diana Lopez, were also wounded during the attack. The situation escalated into a standoff with law enforcement, as Machado endangered others in the surrounding area. Authorities later confirmed that Machado was expected to face multiple felony charges, including murder, aggravated assault on police officers, and aggravated assault on additional victims.
Following the tragic event, Machado was hospitalized in critical condition but had already been formally charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
