Alexus Nicole Zepeda, a 17-year-old female of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost her life on October 31, 2016, in Laredo, Texas. She was one of two victims found with gunshot wounds to the head and torso near the intersection of Estrella Drive and Arco Iris Road in the Los Altos Subdivision. The other victim, Andrew Michael Moreno, 18, was also killed in the incident.
The investigation into their deaths led to the arrest and eventual conviction of Edwin Cortez-Mercado, a 20-year-old
male. Cortez-Mercado was indicted on January 25, 2017, and later pleaded guilty to two counts of murder. As part of a plea agreement, a third charge of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence was dropped. On January 30, 2018, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the killings.
During the sentencing hearing, both victims' families gave impact statements, expressing the profound pain and loss they experienced due to the senseless violence. Zepeda's mother described her daughter as someone who always put others first and was not only her daughter but also her best friend. Moreno's brother emphasized the destruction Cortez-Mercado's actions had caused to both families.
The case brought a sense of justice to the families, although nothing could truly compensate for the loss of their loved ones. The community and authorities hoped that this outcome would serve as a deterrent to such violent acts in the future.
