Nikki Janelle Ortiz Enriquez, a 28-year-old Latinx transgender woman from Laredo, Texas, tragically lost her life on September 15, 2018. She was one of four women killed by Juan David Ortiz, a U.S. Border Patrol supervisor, during a killing spree. Ortiz, who was later arrested, allegedly targeted vulnerable women, including those involved in survival sex work.
Nikki's body was found near a gravel pit along the I-35 highway.

He was eventually tracked down and arrested after a fifth woman, Erika Pena, managed to escape and alert the police. Ortiz was charged with the murders of Nikki and three other women, as well as the kidnapping of Erika Pena.
Nikki was remembered by her family and friends as a high-spirited, outgoing person who was beloved by the local LGBTQ community. Her mother, Edna, described her as someone who always had a smile and never got mad. Her cousin, Veronica Castillo, recalled her as a very nice and outgoing person who loved to party.
