Charles Cicalla, a 33-year-old male veteran, was tragically shot and killed on December 31, 2024, in Memphis, Tennessee. A veteran of the U.S. Army who had served two tours in Afghanistan, he was at a New Year's Eve gathering with friends on Maple Leaf Cove when the fatal shooting occurred. His family was left devastated by the sudden and violent loss.
Authorities quickly identified 43-year-old Kobie Hope as the alleged gunman and issued a warrant for his arrest on charges including
first-degree murder. The investigation revealed that Hope had been released from jail just five days before the shooting. He was previously arrested on December 22 for aggravated assault after he reportedly brandished a gun and threatened to kill a woman who was trying to administer CPR to two shooting victims.
Hope had been held on a $100,000 bond, an amount set in part because he was already out on bond for another charge. However, a judge reduced his bond to $75,000 on December 26, which allowed him to be released after paying the required amount. Cicalla's family has publicly expressed their anguish and frustration with the judicial system, stating their belief that Hope should not have been on the streets. As of early January 2025, Kobie Hope remained at large, and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office was actively searching for him.
