In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025, a teenage prank turned fatal in a quiet suburban neighborhood near Fredericksburg, Virginia, ending the life of 18-year-old Michael Alan Bosworth Jr. A senior at Massaponax High School, known as an athlete who played lacrosse, football, and wrestled, Michael was just weeks away from his graduation and hours away from his senior prom. He had plans to join the U.S. Marine Corps after finishing high school.
Alongside two friends, Michael was participating in a 'ding-dong ditch' challenge, a prank they were reportedly filming for TikTok. The game involved knocking on strangers' doors and then running away. The trio had already targeted a couple of houses in the neighborhood before they arrived at the home of 27-year-old Tyler Chase Butler. Around 3 a.m., a 911 call was made from the residence reporting a burglary in progress.
As Michael and his friends fled the property, Butler allegedly opened fire, striking Bosworth in the torso and injuring one of his companions. Michael was rushed to Mary Washington Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The second teenager was treated for minor injuries and released, while the third was unharmed. The surviving teens told investigators they were simply making prank videos and were looking for a place to hide when the shots were fired.
In the days following the shooting, Tyler Chase Butler was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was taken into custody and held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. Defense attorneys later argued that the teenagers had not just knocked on the front door, but had scaled a six-foot backyard fence to bang on a basement door, causing Butler and his mother to fear for their safety. Surveillance video from that night reportedly captured Butler holding a gun and yelling at the teens before firing. In October 2025, a grand jury formally indicted Butler on the charges related to Michael Bosworth Jr.'s death.
